Sorry it's taken me a while to write this summary.
I originally asked whether anybody knew of a program that allowed me to
create or edit true type fonts so that I could create my own marker set
in ArcView 3.2a.

Thankyou to all those wonderful people who responded (Taylor, Brian,
Andrew, Owen, Jerome, Mike and Jim!).

I ended up following Owen's advice and tried out FCP 3.0 - (Font Creator
Program) by High Logic. It's free for 30 days and allows you to create
and edit fonts quite easily. I got a little bit stuck on mapping my
font, but after a bit of investigation I figured it out. The
functionality of the program is also a bit limited - but it suited my
purposes.

My marker set looks great and loads quickly... so if you're looking for
a quick and easy way to combine tt fonts or create your own markers I'd
recommend this freebie. If you need something more advanced,
Fontographer seems to be the recommended choice.
